I want to keep a record of my journey through the Air Force—of what I went through upon deciding to finally join the Air Force.
STEP ONE: Meeting with a recruiter
I made a decision; I was going to join the military service, but what branch?
Because I wanted to make the fairest choice for myself, I did many researches online, talked to friends, and finally it was time to talk to the recruiters.
Skipping all the details of meeting with all the different service recruiters, and weighing the pros and cons, I decided I wanted to join the Air Force.
Why the Air Force?
Air force offered the least benefits for me and it was the hardest office for me to reach the recruiter, but I made my choice for the Air Force for the better quality of lifestyle, while being in the service.
Anyways, back on point, I called the recruiter. I was scheduled to take the ASVAB test at the MEPS center. It was clear that I would get more specific answers to my questions after I took the ASVAB because the recruiters would have to see if I qualify.
STEP TWO: MEPS - ASVAB
Make sure you arrive at MEPS before 600 or you’ll have to wait until 1300 for the afternoon testing schedule. I got to MEPS at 700 because I didn’t know I had to be there exactly on time, and I had to wait six hours for the afternoon testing.
ASVAB is a test to find out your strengths, weaknesses, and qualification. It was a general test on all subjects. The test was fair; it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I just wish I had studied a little more on mechanics. I had no knowledge on the mechanical portion of the test; I just had to make wild guesses. Advices on taking the ASVAB: Don’t worry too much about it. Study a little. Relax and try your best.
STEP THREE: CHOOSE JOB
After taking the ASVAB, I went back to my recruiter’s office and was given a choice to choose 4 jobs that I would want to have. After looking through the list, I decided I wanted to do something with linguistics so I chose to be a cryptologic linguist (ground or airborne).
STEP FOUR: MEPS - DLAB
STEP FIVE: MEPS - Physical Test
STEP SIX: Waiting…

In the last few days I’ve seen a bear wave goodbye and a iguana excel at video games. Did we all die by a meteor crashing to earth last week and we just don’t know we’re dead yet? That’s probably it.
